Lupa App: Making allergens crystal clear

  • Role: Product Designer
  • Client:Digital Catapult
  • 8 weeks Project. 2022

Project Overview

This app resemble a companion who is mindful and aware of the user’s own allergy condition. Thus, it provides users an opportunity to make a pre-set of their allergens, so it can give better alerts later when they are detected in products. Target audience for the app are people with allergies, specifically the ones with low eyesight.
6 weeks project length, where we worked in sprints with a iterative approach. It included UX research, ideation, user testings, refinements, UI, brand assets and software requirements.

My Contributions

In this project my main contribution was the user research, ware-framing and user testing. The first step was to identify the main challenges that users faced during the flow. After that my job was to simplify the process as much as possible and make it intuitive for the users, as well as improve the visual appeal of the entire app. The most challenging points were the data privacy issues and accessibility during the full flow that ensures a smooth experience for the user.

Impact

20%

Shopping time decrease. Improvement in the user experience at the supermarket.

50%

Increased desire to try new products reducing risk of allergen consumption

70%

Increased trust in products

Approach

The main goal of the project was to create an easier and safer way for individuals to shop packaged foods in busy environments, especially those with low eyesight.  For that, we co-created with allergic users & low eyesight to understand the real challenge. The user research was ran through interviews, surveys, observation and literature review to identify pain points in the user journey.

Increasing trust in a product

A big challenge in this project was finding a way to alert users about the presence of an allergen which the manufacturer has failed to mention. While infrequent, this is an existing problem which has led to people dying. So, tackling it was imperative. We designed a system where users who have an allergic reaction to an undisclosed allergen can report the product. Once people with the same allergy scan this product, they are alerted about user-reported allergen presence.

Accessibility

We defined success as meeting the following WCAG criteria: good colour contrast, usable fonts for all kind of low eyesight, icons always accompanied by text and designing in a logical flow so people using screen magnifiers know what to expect on the screen.

Outcome

Our app prioritized provided allergen visualization so users quickly identify their allergens in packaged food and try new food options. We also included personalized product recommendations and reporting features for undetected allergens. Our goal is to facilitate communication between users, companies, and governments to ensure that no misleading information is overlooked within the FMCG chain.
